I enjoyed hearing my friend and mentor Benji Kelley speak this weekend about those who feel like aliens on the planet–people who have a peculiar desire to live a life that's more connected to spirit than to the world. It does sometimes feel like the world is strangely foreign. But shouldn't it feel alien and peculiar when we are as they say, spirits in the material world?
Dr. Kelley challenged us to be confident about our alienness, remaining focused on the fact that we can be (have a calling to be) truth-tellers, life-givers, and peacemakers in a world that isn't always encouraging us to be that way. Because of competing cultural influences, we do have to be steadfast about being immersed in that which feeds our life force, keeps us honest, and restores our peace so we can bring that peace to the world.
Being the bold truth-tellers, life-givers and peacemakers we were intended to be definitely takes some determination. It also takes getting comfortable with being alien!
Can people sense something supernatural working in you? I believe we are all natural truth-tellers, life-givers and peacemakers who want to re-connect with our spiritual fearlessness and divine innocence. When we let ourselves return to our original child-of-God nature, people sense the supernatural working in us--changing us. It seems like something small and insignificant, but the dedication of even just one life in spirit does powerful things.
Author Marianne Williamson says in "A Return to Love,"
"We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we consiously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
